Extension Home Care
Washing
Before showering, brush your extensions using a Bathpack brush or Wetbrush to prevent tangles and matting.
If you have more than one row of extensions, clip the top row up.
Start washing the bottom row and bottom section of your hair first.
Rinse the bottom section, then work your way up to the top row.
If you’re shampooing once or twice a week it will be necessary to shampoo your hair twice to remove all oil and product build up.
Shampoo only the root area of your hair; shampooing the extensions can dry them out.
The suds from your hair will be enough to cleanse the extensions while rinsing.
Do not scrub the extension hair vigorously to avoid tangling and matting.
Only use the shampoo and conditioner provided in your Extension Home Care Kit.
As your extensions age, we may recommend adjustments to your routine for the best care.
After showering, apply your leave-in detangler to your extensions and your heat protectant to extensions and your natural hair!
Styling
When brushing wet hair, start from your ends and work your way up to the scalp. Hold the hair in one hand (pinched like a ponytail) and brush down.
Blow-dry your hair 80% of the way using your hands/fingers—avoid tugging with a round brush or comb.
This also applies at Dry Bars.
Let the stylist know not to round brush your hair from start to finish during the blowdry.
You can use a round brush with minimal tension to smooth both your hair and extensions in the last few minutes of the blowdry.
If curling your extensions, run the hair through the curling iron once or twice to smooth it before curling. This helps:
Achieve a polished look
Close the cuticle
Prolong the life of your extensions
Apply a combo of your leave in moisture spray and an oil at least once per day before brushing.
We love Un.tangled moisture spray and Young Again Oil from Kevin Murphy!
Sleeping
Brush the extension hair and place it in a loose ponytail or braid before bed.
This prevents matting, tangling, and makes styling easier in the morning.
As the hair ages, you may need more moisture. Use a leave-in moisture spray like Kevin Murphy Un.Tangled Spray and your oil before braiding your hair at night.
Consider using a Satin pillowcase or wearing a Satin Bonnet to keep hair smooth and retain moisture in the extensions.
These help keep the cuticle smooth on the extensions.
Avoid sleeping with wet hair, as it will cause matting.
Do not sleep in a high bun or tight ponytail with extensions.
While these styles are fine during the day, sleeping in them can cause breakage (especially around the face) due to friction from your pillow or restless sleeping.
Recommended sleep styles: Loose low ponytail, loose braid, or two loose braids.
Other Tips
If you notice excess tangling or hair shedding, contact your stylist right away. These are easy to fix when addressed promptly.
Going to the beach or pool?
Spray your hair with leave-in spray and put it in a bun.
Chlorine and saltwater can damage extensions, so it's best to keep your hair out of the water.
If your hair gets wet, shampoo and condition your extensions to remove salt and chlorine.
Avoid products with Keratin or protein.
These can coat the hair and block moisturizing benefits, making it harder for your extensions to stay soft and healthy.
We provide a take-home maintenance regimen with safe products specifically for extensions.
These are vital to keeping your extensions looking their best.
